So it begins..

Hello! Bonjour! Hola! Assalamualaikum!

My name is Zanib and today I am fasting. Ramadan Mubarak to all fellow Muslims who are fasting today or maybe tomorrow. I don't know if there is a Ramadan blog out there or not or maybe this is a first. I simply want to create a community where people who are Muslims or not, fasting or not fasting to learn and see how this month of Ramadan shows us how to appreciate life, appreciate what we have and what we can give to others. How the smallest things in life bring a lot to us that we do not realise.
I will be sharing some recipes, some tips and just helpful random stuff to you guys out there who are interested in Ramadan, or need some support during this month and also if it is someone's first time fasting! (Yey!!)

So lets get to it.

What is Ramadan I hear you scream.
Ramadan is the ninth month of the Muslim year. In this month Muslims around the world fast from dawn to sunset.
The month of fasting this year begins from the evening of Wednesday 17th June, meaning Muslims first fast will be on Thursday 18th June and will finish on either Friday 17th July or Saturday 18th July, depending on the moon.

I know different religions carry out fasting Hinduism, Judaism and Catholic Christians. In Islam, Muslims are not allowed to drink or eat anything..nothing from dawn to sunset. Muslims eat in Suhur. Suhur/sehri/sahur is a pre-dawn meal consumed by Muslims before dawn. Its kind of like breakfast, but you have to be cautious what you eat. Like you need to eat food with some carbohydrates to fuel you for the day and most importantly WATER, to keep you hydrated. I tend to forget this until there is like 10 minutes before Suhur ends, and I drink glasses full of water.

When sunset arrives Muslims have iftaar /iftari. We break open our fast with food by drinking either water or juices eating a date and not to full ourselves up, which is a big mistake done by all.

So this is my intro to you all.
I have never fully done blogging before, so this is my first. If there are any questions anyone wants to ask me about something, or share something to us please comment below and I will get back to.

Ramadan is not just about starving ourselves, its about taking a step back form our busy lives and help those in need. I believe we are far too busy to appreciate that smallest things we have and take granted for and this holy month teaches us to appreciate more. To help us make a bigger and deeper connection with our god.

Good luck fasting. Enjoy this month  to the max as it comes once a year! :)
